Why Powersports Dealers Are Finally Winning the Google Shopping Carousel

May 5, 20266 min readBy Randy James

For years, powersports dealers have been running paid search with one hand tied behind their back. You could spin up Performance Max and show up across YouTube, Gmail, and the Display network, but the single most valuable real estate in Google — the Shopping carousel at the top of the results page — was off-limits. Auto dealers had been parked up there for years with image-heavy Vehicle Listing Ads (VLAs): live photos, prices, locations, the whole package. Powersports? Plain blue text links.

That gap just closed.

Google has officially opened up Powersports VLAs inside Performance Max. ATVs, UTVs, and side-by-sides can now show up in the Shopping carousel with real inventory photos, live pricing, and your dealership's actual location attached. Motorcycles, jet skis, and boats aren't in yet — but they're on the roadmap.

If you sell powersports and run paid ads, this is the most meaningful shift in the channel in the last five years.

Why this matters more than it sounds

It's tempting to file this under "another Google update." Don't. Visual, inventory-driven ads behave fundamentally differently than text ads on high-ticket purchases, and the early benchmarks back that up:

  • Dealers moving spend into feed-driven PMAX campaigns are seeing roughly 15–20% better spend efficiency versus traditional search.
  • VLA-style placements consistently post much stronger conversion rates than standard automotive search — buyers are pre-qualifying themselves on price before the click.
  • Ads showing your actual inventory photos (not generic stock shots) routinely pull ~30% higher CTR. People want to see the exact unit they're going to load on the trailer.

The pattern is the same one we've watched play out on the auto side: the moment buyers can see the unit and the price before clicking, the funnel tightens and the cost per lead drops.

Powersports is a local game — and VLAs are built for it

Nobody Googling "Polaris RZR" is shopping nationally. They're shopping a 30-mile radius. They want a machine they can put a deposit on this weekend, from a dealer they've at least heard of. Inventory-led ads slot into that buying behavior almost perfectly.

A few specific reasons this works:

  1. You're advertising a specific stock number, not a brand. When a rider sees a real photo and a real price, they've already moved from "researching" to "shopping."
  2. You stop paying for tire-kickers. The price is visible before the click. The clicks you do pay for come from people who already like the number.
  3. You finally close the loop. PMAX with a live inventory feed puts you on YouTube, Gmail, Maps — and now the top of Search where the actual buying decisions happen.

What to do this quarter

If you want to take advantage of this without lighting money on fire, the order of operations matters:

  • Get your inventory feed clean. Real photos, accurate prices, correct location data, GTINs and stock numbers tied to your DMS. The feed is the campaign — a sloppy feed will sink even a well-built PMAX.
  • Split your PMAX by intent. Don't let one asset group try to do brand, model, and "near me" all at once. Group by category (UTV vs. ATV vs. side-by-side) so the algorithm can actually learn.
  • Watch your search terms and placements. PMAX is more transparent than it used to be — use it. Negative out the junk early.
  • Tie conversions back to the right action. Form fills and phone calls aren't equal. Weight them properly in Google Ads so the bidder optimizes toward actual revenue, not the easiest action.

The bottom line

Auto dealers had this advantage to themselves for years and used it to scoop up local buyers before the competition even got a swing. Now the same toolkit is on the table for powersports. If you've got inventory on the floor, it needs to be on the screen — with a real photo and a real price — before your neighbor down the road does it first.

If you want a second set of eyes on your feed and PMAX setup before you scale spend, that's exactly the kind of thing we audit on the powersports side. Reach out and we'll take a look.
